Ageless Aging–What’s Your Approach?

By on January 20, 2015

what started out as a comment on another site about my approach to aging, grew to me turning it into a post on mine. Simply because it’s something I’m passionate about–Ageless Aging.

Before I share, please know I don’t say these things to put a feather in my cap either. The gods know I’m always a work in progress! Aside from aches/pains, I feel better now at 51 than I did in my 20’s. Had it not been for structural damage to my body (and missing parts), I’d no doubt be aging even slower. I’m just thankful to be alive as long as I have. Losing my parents prematurely put me on my path to help others avoid untimely death.

“From my perspective, there’s no reason to be afraid of aging, because if you age, you’re lucky! The alternative is death.” ~Drew Barrymore~

Gotta Start Young!

Better late than never. However, I began following my late mother in applying moisturizer as a young teen. As a former barber/hairdresser, I would also ask for the beauty secrets of those elders w/ bragging rights. Thus began my lifelong journey in slowing down the aging process. For starters, I do not use soap or water to wash my face, but instead coconut or olive oil, apple cider vinegar or witch hazel. I then moisturize with either of those oils. And I don’t just rub it in, I massage it in with a lil extra time given to those areas known to sag… eyelids and jowls. Once or twice/week I scrub with baking soda. I drink plenty of water and eat healthy most hours of day/ days of week, which includes lots of good fat. I also try not to eat dinner past 6pm and/or I have lunch (lunch/dinner). After dinner walks are the best for helping our food digest before bed, but not always possible. As for DETOX… that alone has been a fountain of youth for my body, mind & spirit. These last two years as a gypsy, is the longest stretch I’ve gone WITHOUT regular and/or deep down detox, and I’m feeling and looking it!

Which is why it saddens me to see so many abuse and neglect their body. Once the aging begins, it’s harder to stop. What begins showing up on the outside, is only a fraction of what’s happening on the inside. Sadly, each generation appears to be aging more quickly. Even more disturbing is they’ve come to accept and expect this dis-ease and fatigue as a normal part of aging. The key is quality, not just quantity of life. For you guys and gals in your 20’s and 30’s, please realize, your diet and lifestyle WILL catch up to you.

Foods That Puff You Up Can Shrivel Your Skin Later

To avoid wrinkles I try to avoid too many sugary and salty foods. If I have em’, I’m sure to flush them out with plenty of water, a half to an hour or so later. Our skin can only stretch and shrink so many times without becoming wrinkled. I also add gelatin to my water on occasion, as it helps with collagen. This, despite being a vegetarian since the 60’s. Meaning… Although I dislike red meat, I’m not anal or a fanatic. You’ve gotta have an open and flexible mind to practice dis-ease prevention and natural healing. And, as much as I hate wearing sunscreen, I began using it on my face less than two years ago, though only on exposed parts. I wear a hat most of the time.

Age Is Just A Number

All in all, I must be doing something right to have one gal a few months ago in her 20’s say, you’re 30, just face it. And earlier in the year have a nurse ask me my age several times. Saying I didn’t look my age (prior to a mammogram after 10 years without). And her compliment wasn’t because of the boobs (UGH!), it was from no wrinkles and being somewhat fit (I think?). Prior to her, my primary doctor told me I wasn’t his type–said I was too young and healthy. Why? Because I tend do my body like I do my vehicle in order to keep it running smoother and last me longer. We mustn’t underestimate the power of maintenance. .. Diet. Detox. And exercise! It’s not a choice, it’s a lifestyle.

“The most important thing I can tell you about aging is this: If you really feel that you want to have an off-the-shoulder blouse and some big beads and thong sandals and a dirndl skirt and a magnolia in your hair, do it. Even if you’re wrinkled.” ~Maya Angelou~
