Gastric Bypass = Broken Bones

By on July 21, 2015

WHO would have thought, Gastric Bypass = Broken Bones. While obesity and gastric bypass are one thing, broken bones are another. However, it’s not the broken bones that hurt, it’s the damage done to the surrounding soft tissue that does. And what good is weight loss, if someone is gonna be out of commission with a broken bone?

I’m no stranger to pain. However, as my latest anesthesiologist pointed out… your surgeries (6 TOTAL) are from injury not diet or health related issues. BINGO! However, having my rib removed caused other misalignment problems. And while that hurt, I recovered rather quickly. My broken wrist (and surgery) have left me feeling like a wimp. Not from the bone either, but from the muscles, ligaments, and all the other soft tissue, from my elbow down to my fingers. And that doesn’t include thee aggravated Thoracic Outlet Syndrome pain.

Why do I mention this? Because apparently, but not surprisingly, these gastric surgeries are affecting people in ways they probably never imagined. Namely, absorption issues. And they’re bound to cause more than just broken bones.

“Adults with type 2 diabetes undergoing bariatric surgery are likely to experience reductions in lean mass, bone mineral content and bone mineral density, even with calcium and vitamin D supplementation, according to research in Obesity.” ~Maghrabi AH, Healio.com~

I realize these persons also have Diabetes, however, kidneys play a huge role in the lives of Diabetics. So Diabetic or not, it’s all connected, as you’ll see below.

RE-ENGINEERING of the body doesn’t work!

It was only a matter of time before the ill effects of these surgeries made the news. Even mechanics know vehicles aren’t meant to have their tubes clipped, stapled, removed, reduced or squished. And be expected to run perfectly. So WHY humans? I have much respect for mechanics. There’s a time to reinvent the wheel, our god-given body is not one of them.

“Four participants in the gastric bypass group and two participants in the sleeve gastrectomy group reported peripheral fractures, as well as four participants in the medical therapy group.

Despite the lack of change in bone mineral content and density in [the medical therapy group], there were similar fracture rates in this group as compared with [the gastric bypass group].” ~Healio.com~

Aside from the bones NOT getting the minerals and such they need, this is horrible news. And to think supplements won’t help?! That being said… don’t believe everything “they” tell you. If you think you can rebuild your bones, you will. Exercise is one great way to do so.

Thee other way I found is horsetail. A fascinating find! Good for many things, including hair, skin and nails. But because it’s especially good for the kidneys (stones and as a diuretic), it is great for the bones. Bone marrow to be exact. The following is what SOLD ME on horsetail

“Within about two weeks she was out of her wheelchair and walking short distances using a walker, and she continued to make rapid improvement. Five weeks later she was walking with the aid of only a four-pronged cane, and six weeks later she was walking without assistance and got a car and began driving again. She said her doctors told her that her x-rays showed rapid healing of her bone after the time she started taking the horsetail and magnesium, and reduced her calcium intake. In contrast to her despair about her condition when I first talked to her, she was in a very positive mood each time I talked to her after she changed her regimen.” ~Earth Clinic**once on Earth Clinic, scroll down to read about horsetail

Mother Nature’s miracle came after this woman was in a wheelchair FOUR MONTHS.

The day I began taking it, my arm felt ALIVE! And my bone didn’t break from brittle bones either. Month before the break, I had my first bone density test (at 51). It was A-okay, as were all the other routine blood tests.

While I’m glad they’ve discovered this, for many it is too late. For some, having gastric bypass surgery now includes broken bones. A vicious cycle of weight lost, coming back.

Gastric Bypass = Broken Bones = Weight Gain

**NOTE: Horsetail is NOT to be taken by pregnant or lactating moms. It’s also not recommended for long term use.
