Kombucha For Pennies a Day!

By on February 5, 2010

For those of you who don’t know what Kombucha is… it is a sparkling and invigorating fermented tea. It is highly beneficial and once brewed, contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12, folic acid, antioxidants, enzymes, probiotics, polyphenols, and glucuronic acid (which helps detoxify the body and liver). It has been around for centuries, used by many to increase energy, aid in weight loss, improve well-being, and cure diseases.

Some are afraid to try because of its potential alcohol content. I’ve had some that have been sober for years be afraid to drink it, when in reality, it helps cut sugar and alcohol cravings. A ripe banana has more alcohol than kombucha. There is no better way to judge the drink  than to drink it yourself.

There are “starter” batches sold in the range of $30, though… if you don’t have someone to give you one, you don’t need to buy a starter kit to begin making your own. Simply get yourself  store brand and use that as a starter tea. It will take longer, but that’s part of the fun. Consider trying a few brands before selecting one to ferment your tea. Just be sure it is raw, organic, and unflavored. The are many variations to the recipes and to the supplies needed. I have found that less is more. You don’t need fancy equipment or even tea bags for that matter. After reading several recipes, I started out by teaching myself. I made flawless batch after flawless tasty batch. I have since taken 2 classes on how to brew, which are much easier than the original way I brewed. Years ago I made 1 gallon at a time – today I have at least 2 2.5 gallon glass jugs going at one time.

**Note: one key to making your own flawless batches are to keep your hands and supplies/ingredients clean at all times. If you’re still not sure, I’m happy to send the recipe!

“There is no hard data on total kombucha sales, but estimates range from $50 million to $300 million annually.”  ~Dalia Fahmy, ABC News – July 12, 2010~
