Melasma Driving You Mad? – Part II

By on June 29, 2013

Melasma-UGH! The dreaded, chronic, stubborn, and rather common condition that left me feeling alone, until… my original post, Melasma Driving You Mad? I’m so glad I’m transparent. It is key to my happiness, and precisely why I wrote publicly about my quiet suffering. I shared my head scratching journey of frustration to my… what does Oprah call it? My AH-HA moment of knowing all along what was happening to my skin. that post helped me realize I am not alone.

“There is more wisdom in your body than in your deepest philosophies.”  ~Friedrich Nietzche~

I have since had my first glycolic acid peel. Unfortunately for me, it did NOTHING but leave my skin worse. Since I am a woman of color, this is common. I knew this prior to treatment and that is why I signed their waiver and cancelled 2nd appointment. No biggy, I simply took a few steps back by using my compounded

photo taken from last year’s surprise 49th birthday shindig. Since I don’t wear makeup, you can see the melasma on my cheek.

pharmaceutical grade hydroquinone cream (again). UGH! To tell you the truth, I’ve had bouts of wondering what happens when I stop this Band-Aid treatment. For now, I will cross that bridge when I get to it and continue using 110+ sunscreen as I get to my root cause. I’ve never been a fan of makeup, let alone sunscreen, but if it is good for my emotional health… I’m using it (the sunscreen)! Why? Because my regular detox helps clean my body and blood of harmful chemicals, so, I’m not worried! And one thing I won’t do is become a fanatic.

What I’ve also begun doing again is adding grapefruit seed extract to my water (in case fungus related) and alternate with raw apple cider vinegar. Now mind you, what works for one won’t always work for another. Knowing this is why I’ve tried many of the things I’ve researched over the years – lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, horseradish, dandelion, milk thistle, yogurt, raw coconut oil, licorice root, pycnogenol, maca, baking soda (internal and external), Vitamin E, Vitamin C, diatomaceous earth, and a sulfur-lavender soap. **Most of these items can be found at the Alternative Medical/Beauty Supply Store.

There is no single cure or cause to anything. As, Dr. DiCenso says… anything can cause anything. This, being the difference between conventional healthcare and natural healing. One prescription/course of action does not fit all because we are not a number, therefore one-size-DOES-NOT-fit-all. What does hold true is… a clean diet composed of real food and a clean body by way of real food and regular detox will allow us to look and feel our best. It does wonders for our health and our face value. Always has, always will.

You can try product and/or remedy after remedy like I did, or shorten your learning curve, take the guesswork out, and get to the root cause by taking a MAP test. Taking this test was like night and day for me. It confirmed what I knew, my adrenals were shot despite my complete blood work (done just 2 months prior) showed they were fine. Next month I begin the MAP protocol. I will also write a follow-up post once I speak with doctor, which is included with the test. YAY!

Today I go to a sweat lodge – I’m anxious to see how the heat affects my skin since I began the rather conventional “treatment.” Another follow-up post (or two) will explain how and why my health hasn’t been what it should be. For now, I’ll just say, major stress and being a Gypsy haven’t helped. Experience makes one a better teacher. As my former Herbalist/Naturopath employer would say… he’s not a virgin sex counselor. Meaning… we should only teach what we have done on ourselves first. If you’re gonna have a mentor in any area, a prerequisite should be one that walk their talk. And above all, patience is a virtue. According to what I’ve read about natural healing… for every year we abuse our body, it takes one month to undo.
